About Alison Burnett

In the natural world of the horse, cooperation is a powerful theme.  The strength of their affection and devotion is compelling and felt intensely in our human realm.  Relationships-of all kinds- voiced with the particular grace of Equus Caballus have inspired this series of charcoal works on paper.

'Horses make a landscape more beautiful'
- Lame Deer Seeker of Visions

Alison Burnett studied fine art at Lowestoft College of Art and Ipswich College of Art in Great Britain.   She is also an avid horsewoman and is a British Horse Society Horsemaster.

Her most well known works grew out of the extended period when she lived  on the Gulf of Mexico in Florida.  Though much of her work comprised still-life, she is perhaps best recognised for her luminous portraits of her daughter, Anna. The intimate bond between artist and subject continues with her equine art.

Composed of charcoal on paper, the medium is one with an ancient and distinguished legacy.  Used in preparatory work for oil paintings, alone these drawings most often convey the truest emotion.  Unlike a pencil or graphite 'sketch', as a stick of charcoal is drawn across paper it leaves behind particles with a rough irregular shape.

The resulting image is one with dramatic depths of black and a matte and velvety surface. Lines and forms are rendered with robust and painterly effect as well as with meticulous sensitivity of detail.   The simplicity and power of charcoal drawing remain unsurpassed.

Alison Burnett's work is in galleries, museums and private collections throughout the world.
